Question: TPMS light is on

It has been very cold here in Boston for weeks. After being out shopping, when I got home the tire pressure light came on. How far can I drive to put air in tire?

Your TPMS is supposed to inform you when your tire pressure is low, and most times it works fine. In cold weather, thermal contraction (things expand when hot, contract when cold) can cause your tires to drop in pressure (all of them) just enough to trigger your TPMS light. First, check if you have a real problem, like a flat tire. If all the tires look ok, then you should be able to drive to an air supply somewhere close. If your tires are visibly low, don't drive at highway speeds. If you inflate them to the pressure indicated on the label on your driver's door jam or driver's door, the light should go out. If it stays on for more than a day or two, and your tires are correctly inflated, take it to a tire dealer, mechanic or car dealership service department to have it recalibrated. As long as you're sure the tires are inflated and holding air, there is no danger in driving with the light on as long as you have it corrected soon so you can trust the light again.

It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
