Question: How can I tell what year and series my Sprite is?

My Sprite looks like a 60's MG. How do I know what year and series it is?

Greg,

Here's how to tell the year and model of the engine and the chassis (courtesy of my paper copy of www.VictoriaBritish.com's excellent catalog for Sprite & Midget), in case the two were separated from their original mate at some point in time:

Engine ID
The engine number is stamped on a plate secured to right hand side of the cylinder block above the generator. The engine ID is made up of 4 pieces as follows:
##C/G = 9C (948 cc engine), 10CG/10CC (1098 cc engine), or 12CC/12CD (1275 cc engine).
Da = close-ratio center change gearbox
H=High compression or L=Low compression
lastly the engine serial number detailed next
Model MK 1 had the 948cc engine with numbers 9C...H101 through 9C...H49201 (1958-61)
MK 2 had the 948cc engine with numbers 9CG...H101 through 9CG...H36711 (1961-62)
MK 2 also had the 1098cc engine with numbers 10CG...H101 through 10CG...H21048 (1963-64)
MK 3 had the 1098cc engine with numbers 10CC...H101 through 10CC...H16300 (1965-66)
MK 4 had the 1275cc engine with numbers 12CC... through 12CE... (1967-69)

Chassis ID
The chassis number is stamped on a plate mounted on the left hand inner wheel arch valance under the hood.
Model MK 1 chassis numbers HAN-501 through HAN-5-50116 years 1958-61
MK 2 (948cc engine) chassis numbers HAN-6-101 through HAN-6-24731 years 1961-62
MK 2 (1098cc engine) chassis numbers HAN-7-24732 through HAN-7-38828 years 1963-64
MK 3 chassis numbers HAN-8-38829 through HAN-8-64734 years 1965-66
MK 4 chassis numbers HAN-9-64735 through HAN-9-85286 years 1967-69

Hope that helps you on your way to knowing more about your car. As the owner of a 1960 Bugeye Sprite for the past 12 years, I highly recommend Victoria British for parts.

Enjoy your car,
Brad (bradandjaya at verizon dot net)

Car Brakes: How Do You Know When to Change Them?

By Zach Bowman For those who suffer a daily commute through heavy traffic, your vehicle's braking system can bring thousands of pounds of metal, plastic and empty Starbucks cups to a stop hundreds of times before you get to work. It goes without saying that these pieces wear out, but they do so slowly, meaning you may not notice they need attention until ...
